MYSTERIOUS MIAMI CIRCLE
In 1998, workers clearing land for a new high-rise condo in downtown Miami made a startling discovery that would become one of Florida's most important archeological sites ever. To their surprise, they uncovered a circular pattern of holes cut into the limestone bedrock that measured 38 feet in diameter! The first archeologist to examine the strange circle determined the holes were used to support posts for a large, round council house. The circle was believed to have been created by the Tequesta Indians between one and two thousand years ago, centuries before the arrival of the Seminoles.
Before long, other theories began to circulate. Some people thought the circle was nothing more than an old septic system, and the holes were overflow drains. Other theories included: it was part of a world wide system of circles connected to Stonehenge; a part of the Mayan calendar; a part of Atlantis; or a corner marker for the Bermuda Triangle. As excavation of the circle continued, more history was uncovered ... carvings in the center stone, 24 rectangular basins, at least two hundred other "post holes", various tools, burnt wood and bones from sea turtles, sharks, and monk seals.
Soon, the site was deemed by many as "sacred land" and over night, "Save the Cirlce" groups began a long fight to prohibit the development of the land. In 2003, Senator Bob Graham introduced legislation that would authorize a study into the cost of incorporating the prehistoric site into Biscayne National Park. Shortly thereafter, Miami-Dade purchased the land from the developers for $26.7 million dollars.
