The air strikes come amid Turkey's row with Syria over a downed Turkish jet. Turkey's general staff said on its website that its warplanes had hit "nine targets belonging to the separatist terrorist organisation", referring to the PKK, and that all planes had returned safely.

He raised the issue with U.K. Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett in London on July 18. Gul told reporters following the meeting that he called for international support against the PKK.
